About

Hello food lover!

I’m guessing you’re here because you understand that food isn’t just sustenance. Food is deeply intertwined with who we are and our cultures. It’s a part of every construct that forms our society: race, gender, religion, sexuality, socio-economic status, and so on. I use this blog to explore those spaces, utilize these historic markers to make projections about the future of our society, and have fun sharing recipes from historic cookbooks.

To back it up a smidgen, I’m Amber Jackson. I’m a South Side Chicago native, currently studying gastronomy at Boston University. My background is in food science and product development, but it was a podcast episode of Gettin’ Grown Podcast that featured Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson that encouraged me to pivot. Listening to the author of Eating While Black discuss the foodways of the Black community, and our social, cultural, and historical ties to food, I immediately felt connected to this work.

Since beginning my master’s program, I’ve become incredibly passionate about public history, our connection, and creative story telling. Through blogging, I’m hoping to challenge myself to observe and write about food historically, sociologically, and anthropologically. I also get to have some fun in the kitchen and share it with you all. Thank you for joining me on this journey!

Cheers!

Amber Jackson.
